Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a list of sources relevant to the analysis of the developments in the (economic) history of the Indonesian archipelago. The colonial state in Java came into being after the dissolution of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) on 31 December 1799. Established in 1602 in order to participate in the lucrative trade in Asian spices, the VOC managed to assert itself in a bustling commercial environment.
