Chapter Summary

The introductory chapter of the book deals with a research based on corpus of terracotta in order to have an overview of production and not to be dependent on the choice of collector. From the corpus, we have chosen to focus on study of theme: that of animals. This choice was quickly established as most articles which deal with terracotta have focused primarily on gods; we too often forgot that the animal figurines form important part of this production especially in Roman era. The chapter focuses on the set of pieces listed to have a vision as complete as possible of place held by such or such species, not only in production but also in other artifacts of Greco-Roman era. The study of terracotta produced in the era thus joins in renewed interest, but we wish to give particular orientation. The original text of the chapter is in French.

Keywords: animal figurines; gods; Greco-Roman era; production; terracotta
