The book explores the rise of popular Chinese print media - Liangyou as it relates to the quest for modernity in the global metropolis of Shanghai from 1926 to 1945. It investigates the "golden age" (1927-37) of Chinese and Japanese modernist magazines, and examines the history of patent medicines in Republican-era Shanghai. The book takes up gender roles in flux, and deals with the problem of the place and function of "traditional" guohua paintings in representations of "modernity".
