Chapter Summary

The work Faith on the Margins describes the strong influence of Catholic laypeople in shaping and developing a Catholic missionary church in the seventeenth-century Protestant Dutch Republic. This chapter focuses on the polemical and apologetic publications, particularly those written by the Jesuits of the Flemish-Belgium Province. In other words, it focuses on whether these publications reflect the contexts or environments in which they were written. The chapter describes a selection of controversial publications by the Jesuits by analyzing the strategies of consolidation and persuasion used in their publications, as well as the impact that the context (environment), the target group (Catholics or non-Catholics), and the polemical tradition of the Society of Jesus (especially Robert Bellarmine) had on this process. This analysis clearly shows that the dialectical environment in which these pastors acted, their target group, and the strategies of consolidation, persuasion, and conversion are interrelated in these publications.
