Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Workers, Unions and Politics contains the table of contents and the preface, a note on spelling, the acknowledgements, and a list of abbreviations. The book covers the second stage of the history of the Indonesian labour movement, between the ill-conceived PKI rebellions of late 1926 and early 1927 and the Japanese occupation in March 1942. The labour movement has its own history, or histories, but at the same time had an important role in the development of the idea of Indonesia and the evolution of the nationalist political movement. There is an emphasis on the inter-relationships between urban workers, labour unions and nationalist political parties, not only at the leadership level but also at the level of ordinary members. A history of the second phase of the Indonesian labour movement is heavily dependent on publications produced by unions themselves.

Keywords: conceived PKI rebellions; Indonesian labour movement; Japanese occupation; labour unions; nationalist political movement; nationalist political parties; urban workers
