Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Protocols of Justice: The Pinkas of the Metz Rabbinic Court 1771-1789 contains the table of contents, contents of the Hebrew volume, preface, acknowledgements, and a list of maps and abbreviations. The book contains two volumes. It discusses the Pinkas of the Metz Beit Din, which offers an exceptional opportunity to investigate the interrelationship between law and society and reviews the interplay between French law and Jewish law. The Metz court records contain conclusive evidence that the engagement of Jews with the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of the society around them was far greater than is generally assumed. The book demonstrates the value that rabbinic court records hold out for contemporary historical scholarship and discusses the legal methodology and jurisprudence of Rabbi Yaʾir Hayyim Bacharach of seventeenth-century Worms, and adaptive capacity of Jewish religious and legal traditions.

Keywords: French law; Jewish legal tradition; Jewish religious tradition; legal methodology; Metz Beit Din; Pinkas; Rabbi Yaʾir Hayyim Bacharach
