Chapter Summary

In the ever so complex field problems related to Gnosticism, there are still many gray areas that qualify for the event. The technical literature on Gnosticism has only little room for this kind of problems. The author first discusses some observations concerning the appellation that formulate the object of the investigation, namely ideas about the Church and the very notion of the Gnostics. Regarding the first point, the author would not want to stick to a narrow definition of the Church, and that is why he chooses a fairly broad term "ideas about the Church". He considers that the Gnostics possibly have to say about the nature of the Church, its organization and the concrete forms in which it appears. So he focuses both its theological structure as sociological data and tries to determine its place, its purpose, and what it represents as a community.

Keywords: Church; Gnostics; sociological data; technical literature; theological doctrine
