Chapter Summary

This chapter presents an overview on the land of Nordic men. Norway stays in a lively exchange with the rest of the world since the Viking Age despite its geographical remoteness. Archaeological evidence shows that there was a long period of Christian influence in Norway earlier than the official Christianization. The Christianization of Norway is therefore considered as a gradual process in research. The Old West Norse sagas of the late 12th century and especially the 13th century are the main source for the reconstruction of the medieval history of Norway. The chapter discusses the Viking and Christian King: The historic person Olav Haraldssons. It discusses the sources of the Scandinavian Middle Ages to Olav and the King Sagas. In a short span of fifty years (1180-1230) Old West Norse king sagas were created. The original text of the chapter is in German.

Keywords: Christianization; Nordic men; Olav Haraldssons; Old West Norse sagas; Scandinavian middle age; Viking age
