Chapter Summary

This chapter examines the policies and actions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding piracy collectively, by some IMO Member Governments and by the IMO Secretariat, particularly the IMO Secretary-General. It begins with a summary of IMO actions taken in confronting piracy worldwide. The chapter examines IMO efforts in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore between 1993 and 2013, followed with an examination of the much more difficult problem of piracy off the coast of Somalia which has been a major focus of the IMO since 2005. The section on Somalia includes a tribute to the tireless work of the now-retired IMO Secretary-General Mitropoulos in galvanizing international action to repress piracy off the coast of Somalia. The chapter concludes with a summary of the new anti-piracy work undertaken by the IMO regarding piracy off the coast of West Africa.
