Chapter Summary

This appendix section of the book The Intention of Matthew 23 contains a list of Matthean and Semi-Matthean Words. A preconceived Sitz im Leben for Matthew does not seem to be particularly helpful in interpreting Matthew 23. Although it may provide a justification for the vitriolic nature of the address, it fails to account for the apparent contradictions in 23:2-3 and 23: 23. The first step in determining what sources Matthew may have had in hand is to compare Matthew 23: 1-39 with its synoptic parallels.
