Chapter Summary

Data collection and information exchange on a regular basis for shared freshwater resources among riparian states is an initial and fundamental step towards transboundary cooperation, contributing to a more informed discussion on transboundary water issues among riparian states. In light of the polycentric feature of transboundary cooperation in the Mekong region, the status quo of water-related information collection and exchange in the region can be examined from several perspectives, including the relevant cooperation among four member countries of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) and between the MRC and China. Attention is paid to information exchange systems under the Greater Mekong Subregional (GMS) Program and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Recommendations are given on what needs to be further improved in this area and more importantly, how to cultivate and facilitate changes towards this direction.

Keywords: ASEAN; Greater Mekong Subregional (GMS) Program; Mekong region; Mekong River Commission (MRC); riparian states; shared freshwater resources
