Chapter Summary

This introductory chapter presents an overview of the book Stewardship and the Kingdom of God, which brings the meaning of this enigmatic parable into progressively clearer focus by investigating it in terms of its various contextual levels. The book provides a history of the recent interpretation of the parable of the unjust steward (nineteenth and twentieth centuries) as background for the subsequent study. It focuses on the investigation of the parable to include its immediate and broader literary contexts. The book relates the parable to the theological context, in particular Luke's well-known emphasis on riches and poverty and Jesus' teaching on the kingdom of God. The eschatological background of the parables has been recognized and widely affirmed since the work of Dodd and Jeremias.
