Chapter Summary

This chapter presents an overview on the relationship between the Paul and Philippian community based on the Hellenistic-Roman social conventions. The exchange relationship between the Paul and Philippians stands out from relationships that Paul had with other communities. Paul gives and takes a community with the Philippians. The Roman embossed context should also be considered for the development of social relations between the Paul and Philippians community. According to Marshall, the ancient relationship takes considerably in the exchange of gifts or gifts. However, Marshall overlooks a problematic consequence resulting from the transfer of friendship concept. The criticism of the use of Hellenistic thought on friendship, the relationship between Paul and his community and especially to the Philippians can be formulated in more general.
