Chapter Summary

This introductory chapter provides an overview of the book Farāmarz, the Sistāni Hero: Texts and Traditions of the Farāmarznāme and the Persian Epic Cycle, which addresses the epic traditions surrounding Farāmarz. The book examines Farāmarz's role in the history of the kings and the Persian epic cycle. It lists the poems of the epic cycle and pays attention to each of their textual traditions and contents. This enables understanding of how the later epics relate to each other and to Ferdowsi's Shāhnāme. The book provides the basis upon which more in-depth research can be pursued, not just of Farāmarz and the poems in which he plays a role, but also of other individual later epics and epic figures. Several later epic texts have, similar to the Shāhnāme itself, been lithographed. The production of lithographed books took place at a time from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century.

Keywords: Farāmarz's Shāhnāme; lithographed books; Persian epic cycle
