Chapter Summary

This chapter discusses five histories that include one or more accounts surrounding Farāmarz. Of these histories, two are written in Arabic; the other three are in Persian. These works are, in the order in which they were produced, Ṭabari's History, its translation by Balʿami, Ṡaʿālebi's Ghorar al-siyar, the anonymous Mojmal al- tawārikh, and Malek Shāh Sistāni 's Eḥyāʾ al-moluk. Ṭabari and Balʿami present their histories of the Persian kings in a very concise manner. The chapter discusses two more works. The section on the Mojmal al-tawārikh is followed by one on Shahmardān Abiʾl-Kheyr's Nozhatnāme-ye ʿalāʾi. This text is not a history, but a scientific encyclopaedia. Nevertheless, it contains a short chapter about the actions of Rostam and several other Shāhnāme warriors, including Farāmarz. The additional work, which is discussed as part of the section on the Eḥyāʾ al-moluk, is a sixth history, the Tārikh-e Sistān.
