Chapter Summary

The later addition of Farāmarz to the history of the kings also becomes clear from the manner in which he appears in Ferdowsi's Shāhnāme. In this epic, Farāmarz is virtually uninvolved in matters of the Iranian kingship. His most important appearances, during the reigns of kings Goshtāsp and Bahman, are in relation to Sistān's internal affairs. Farāmarz does play a role in the Shāhnāme episode of Rostam's fight with Esfandiyār, but he most notably comes to the fore after Rostam's death, when he exacts revenge. For the rest, Farāmarz makes only minor contributions to certain Shāhnāme episodes set during the reigns of the kings Kāwos and Khosrow. Of the entire series of wars against Turān, he only takes part in the very first battle. During the rest of the wars of vengeance, Farāmarz is absent, as he is dispatched to India at the beginning of Khosrow's reign.
