Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Science and Technology in Modern China, 1880s-1940s contains the table of contents, a list of figures, and notes on the contributors. The conference held at Connecticut, USA, in January 2010 brought together junior and senior scholars of history, history of science, and literature in an attempt to reevaluate the meaning and practice of "scientism" in nineteenth and twentieth century China. Revisiting the foundations of modern intellectual history as well as charting new directions in the study of science and technology in relation to culture, the authors identified several themes including intellectual history and humanism; language, translation, and the technology of scripts; scientism and national empires of knowledge; and lexical changes and epistemological shifts.

Keywords: history of science; modern China; scientism
