Chapter Summary

This section presents a short introduction to the translation of the Centinela contra Judíos. The author attempts to render into English as faithfully as possible not just the original text of the Centinela but also its somewhat rough-and-ready tone: that of a book that was never intended to be a work of high literature but which was instead a work of popular propaganda aimed at a lay readership rather than at erudite theologians. In some instances, Spanish wordplays used by Francisco de Torrejoncillo that could not be translated into English have been translated literally and an explanatory footnote added. Readers interested in the original Spanish décimas of the Centinela will be able to find them in the documentary appendix. Fray Torrejoncillo apparently preferred to use Arabic numerals instead of writing out the numbers in words.

Keywords: Arabic numerals; Centinela contra Judíos; erudite theologians; Francisco de Torrejoncillo; Spanish décimas; Spanish wordplays
