Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Moria de Erasmo Roterodamo: A Critical Edition of the Early Modern Spanish Translation of Erasmus's Encomium Moriae contains the table of contents, acknowledgments and a list of abbreviations. The Encomium Moriae's impact on sixteenth-century Spanish literature has been one of the most discussed and intriguing questions. Apart from the ferocious attacks the work received from its religious critics, there is no doubt that the Moria de Erasmo Roterodamo was well known to the Spanish Renaissance intelligentsia, as passages of the work appear in numerous literary works, either as direct translations or as adaptations. However, many scholars have been perplexed by the unavailability of conclusive proof of an early translation, and all the more considering the impressive volume of Erasmus's writings rendered into Spanish.
