Chapter Summary

The work which is the subject of this chapter marked a major advance in the history of medieval political thought. It is the thesis of the chapter that every known printed edition of the Tractatus de modo generalis concilii celebrandi is seriously flawed, and, furthermore, that the deficiencies have prevented scholars from arriving at an adequate interpretation of the nature and the scope of Durant's plan for reform. But there is no doubt that the bishop is chiefly remembered for his major literary effort, the Tractatus de modo generalis concilii celebrandi, which was written on the occasion of the Council of Vienne. The manuscripts contain two separate works,of which the first and longer is called Tractatus maior. The Tractatus minor differs from the Tractatus maior both in structure and in tone. The reason why the Tractatus maior was rewritten and shortened in the Tractatus minor remains to be considered.
