Chapter Summary

Mr. Ma Xiaoping in Textbook on Humanistic Literacy, selected an article by Einstein, On Education. Einstein pointed out three points. First, over-emphasizing competition system and early-on specialization based on direct use, will kill the spirit which all cultural life, including specialized knowledge, needs. Second, too much burden for young people will harm the development of their independent thinking. Over burden makes people shallow. Third, to tempt people to set the narrowly defined success as their life goals. The concept is instilled into their minds that, success means to be the top dag and success need unscrupulous methods. This kind of education, mistaken life goals and loss of life significance are global problems, resulted from modern civilization. Mr. Ma pointed out in many of his articles that the high-speed development of economy, would inevitably lead to the worship of materials, sciences, technologies and competitions, and hence result in inequality.
