Chapter Summary

This chapter examines the role of Protestantism in public life in China regarding homosexual issues. It describes Lü Liping's anti-homosexual Weibo comments as an evangelical Protestant and the reactions and consequences triggered by her comments, because these comments and responses reflect the diverse positions of Chinese people and the central government's attitudes regarding these issues. Same-sex marriage is one of the most visible themes in current controversies regarding the relationship between homosexuality and religion. The chapter identifies historical, cultural, and legal/policy factors that reflect people's attitudes in China. It presents an introduction to liberal Protestants' supporting activities for homosexual rights, which are a very important part of the entirety of Protestants' engagement in promoting inclusivity regarding sexuality. Finally, the chapter illustrates the importance of different religious ideas about homosexuality being allowed into the public debate in China and how the debate itself affects people's attitude toward homosexuality.
