Chapter Summary

This chapter describes and analyzes how a range of Christian constituencies have attempted to negotiate the ever-extending field of sexual minority rights in the United Kingdom (U.K.) and the constructs of citizenship, social inclusion and equality with which they inter-interconnect. The widespread acceptance of sexual minority rights, if not lifestyles, in the majority of mainstream churches and the demands of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered (LGBT) Christian groupings has solicited a response by a number of conservative Christian factions concerned with a constellation of exclusively defined moral topics. The mainstream churches constitute only one voice among many others. The evidence generated by their respective discourses merge rights entitlements and models of citizenship as important resources, not unlike other social movements, in attempting to advance their broader theologies and moralities in an increasing secular terrain where rights are extending across diverse domains of social life.

Keywords: Christian constituencies; contested moralities; LGBT Christian groups; sexual minority rights; United Kingdom
