Chapter Summary

Religion is an institution of control of social action that provides guidance to sexuality and gender. A particularly interesting approach to contribute to the debate on how religion defends certain social gender roles and encourages certain sexual behaviours is by examining charismatic Protestantism in the Global South. This chapter presents a case study, which was based on interviews and intense participant observation, conducted between October 2011 and December 2012. By examining an alternative faith in a Latin American country, the study sheds light on other national conjectures to emphasize religious dynamics in the context of many globalisations. The most prominent activity and that which has increased the projection of Lagoinha Baptist Church at the national level is 'Diante do Trono' (DT), created by Ana Paula Valadão. The chapter addresses gender roles associated with women. It concerns the notion of masculinity, and discusses how same-sex affection is interpreted.

Keywords: Ana Paula Valadão; charismatic protestantism; Diante do Trono (DT); Lagoinha Baptist church; masculinity; religious dynamics; sexuality; social gender
