Chapter Summary

This chapter introduces the RSGY project and presents some of the preliminary Canadian data being produced regarding the intersections of religion, gender and sexuality in Canadian youth. It focuses on two themes from the preliminary data the author has gathered that illuminate the topics of what he calls living religion and living sexuality. The chapter presents results that explore respondents' understandings of changing gender norms and their own contextualization of gender requirements within their belief systems; and the influences they identify on their sexual values versus sexual practices, and what that indicates for notions of living religion. Preliminary analysis demonstrates the importance of the experiential and contextual aspects of identity negotiation. Finally, the chapter concludes with some reflections on these areas in particular and discusses the next steps in the project, which includes semi-structured one-on-one interviews and video diary entries from the participants.
