Chapter Summary

This chapter investigates the relationship between religious coping, subjective well-being, and gratitude in an emerging adult sample. As hypothesized, one can found that individuals reporting greater life satisfaction, more positive affect and less negative affect also reported more gratitude, which is consistent with previous studies. Further, he/she can found that emerging adults who engaged in benevolent religious reappraisal and active religious surrender reported increased gratitude. However, those who utilized negative religious coping and self-directing religious coping had lower levels of gratitude. The relationship between gratitude and aspects of positive religious coping may be attributable in part to the fact that gratitude plays a role in some types of religious coping; that is, certain positive religious coping mechanisms appear to involve the expression of gratitude or an invoking of the positive aspects of the situation which may include giving the situation up to God.

Keywords: active religious surrender; benevolent religious reappraisal; emerging adults; participants' gratitude; religious coping
