Chapter Summary

The relationships between religion and sexuality are myriad and often complex. Social scientists have explored many of the intersections between these domains, presenting both qualitative and quantitative studies on topics as widely arrayed as the relationships among religious variables and pre-marital and non-marital sexual activity; sexual pleasure, shame, and guilt; gender role expectations; homosexuality and bisexuality; homophobia and homonegativity; coping with sexual trauma and bias-related violence, and sexual health behaviors. Sexologists have often relied on unsophisticated or methodologically flawed methods of measuring religion and spirituality. The authors in this book represent a variety of professional disciplines, including psychology, sociology, nursing, and public health. The authors also represent a number of home countries and settings in which their research was conducted, including settings as diverse as Australia, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Keywords: religion; sexuality; spirituality
