Chapter Summary

This chapter explores the experiences of sexuality and daily social activities expressed by Brazilian women who explicitly identified as Protestant. The United Nations have considered religion an essential aspect of daily life. Religiosity, an essential dimension of culture, strongly influences the intimate decisions and actions of the adherents of a religion. Religious beliefs and values also influence the cultural construction of gender, sexuality, and health, as well as the decisions taken and behaviors adopted by women during each stage of life. Four descriptive categories were elaborated: (a) Exemplary behavior is essential to marry a good husband; (b) The submissive attitude of the wife is essential for the harmony of the family; (c) Children should be born only when the family has good financial stability; and (d) Distinct positions exist toward abortion. The importance of individualized approaches and systematized care when religiosity and sexuality are involved was reinforced.

Keywords: Brazilian protestant women; exemplary behavior; religious beliefs; sexuality; United Nations
