Chapter Summary

This chapter clarifies the triangular maritime relationships in the 1910s focusing on the merchant marines. It addresses the impact of the opening of the Panama Canal on the three countries under review. The chapter seeks to address a wider objective: the ways in which World War I influenced the structural change in global society in the 1910s. The opening of the Panama Canal can be described as highly significant because the fundamental structure of British Atlantic-oriented governance of the world was destroyed and the Trans- Pacific relationships between Japan and the United States became more important in the world. When considering international political economy, we are liable to take the development of transportation as a given, tending only to be transfixed by wars and other incidents, but due attention should be paid to the construction of railways or the establishment of shipping routes or canals that transform global transport routes.

Keywords: Japan; merchant marines; Panama Canal; triangular maritime relationships; United States
