It discusses political, cultural and religious realia of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora in the first century. The chapter also presents surveys of private law according to the Jewish and Hellenistic systems. The first system was in effect among Jews in the Land of Israel, and the latter affected Jewish life in the Hellenistic Diaspora both when Jews had recourse to the courts of Hellenistic cities and as a source of influence upon the independent courts of the Jews in the Diaspora.
