Chapter Summary

This introductory chapter of the book Mirroring Europe presents about one of transformation and adjustment in the domains of legislatures, institutions and public policies a characteristic of EU accession in case of "already European" countries in the continent's West in political theory, termed as Europeanization and refers to "domestic impact of European Union". The author discusses two important consequences of predominant political discourses and practices that significantly condition the (self-) perception of these societies in contemporary Europe; (i) concerns link between the Balkans, on the one hand, and colonialism and postcolonial discourses and metaphors, on the other, which becomes increasingly relevant in context of the EU accession of Balkan societies, and (ii) related to socialist legacy of the Balkan societies, which they share with Eastern Europe, and tensions and problems post-socialist societies face within the common political and cultural space of united Europe after the end of the Cold War.
