Chapter Summary

This section presents a list of Greek words relevant to the study of social and economic structure, and religious and cultural life and institutions of Jewish society. The striking characteristic of the Jewish people in the period of the Second Temple was the observance of the Law of the one God, as revealed in the written Torah and the oral tradition. That the whole life of the Jewish people, from hour to hour of its working days as well as on the solemn moments of sabbath and feast-day, was dominated by the Law is evident from talmudic tradition, Josephus and the New Testament, especially the writings of Paul.
