Chapter Summary

This chapter treats literature that is very closely related to the biblical texts, expanding and paraphrasing them and implicitly commenting on them. The Book of Biblical Antiquities is a paraphrase of much broader scope (Genesis to Samuel). The chapter also discusses a different kind of expansion of the biblical text, viz., the introduction of new material into the texts themselves. 1 Enoch is a collection of apocalyptic traditions and writings of diverse genre and date, composed during the last three centuries B.C.E. and accumulated in stages. The Book of Giants is extant, however only in fragments of six Qumran Aramaic manuscripts from the first century B.C.E. and in fragments of a Manichaean version of the book preserved in a number of other oriental languages. Portions of 1 Enoch, Book of Jubilees, and the Genesis Apocryphon comprise a related group of texts. They share related generic features.

Keywords: 1 Enoch; biblical texts; Book of Biblical Antiquities; Book of Giants; Book of Jubilees; Genesis Apocryphon
