Chapter Summary

This chapter begins by listing the titles of books found in association with Gnostic groups, or referred to in Gnostic texts, titles of known Jewish books or of unknown books arguably of Jewish or Jewish Gnostic origin. It then gives examples of how Jewish texts are utilized in Gnostic literature, with special attention to the Enoch literature. Moving to more controversial ground, the chapter gives examples of Jewish or Jewish Gnostic sources (Old Testament, Apocalypse of Abraham) which seem to be imbedded in Christian Gnostic documents. It also takes up the problem of the christianization of Gnostic texts. Finally, the chapter focuses on some extant Gnostic documents which can, in their entirety, be designated as Jewish Gnostic texts (Apocalypse of Adam, Poimandres, Paraphrase of Shem, Zostrianos, Marsanes, Allogenes, Eugnostos, Hypsiphrone, Three Steles of Seth), rather than Christian Gnostic or pagan Gnostic.

Keywords: Allogenes; Apocalypse of Abraham; Apocalypse of Adam; Enoch literature; Gnostic literature; Marsanes; Poimandres
