Chapter Summary

This chapter focuses on three of the oracles in particular - those against Gaza, Tyre, and Edom - because they appear to be closely connected to one another by a combination of conceptual and terminological binders that include the repeated, specific references to Edom in all three oracles, its role as the recipient of the gālût Šelēmāh and the fact that both Gaza and Tyre are charged with delivering over such a 'whole captivity'. Such questions as these naturally arise if the view is accepted that the crimes of Tyre, Gaza, and Edom against which Amos inveighs involve broken treaties. Approximately a century separated Amos from the events with which the oracles against Tyre, Gaza, and Edom are to be associated.
