Chapter Summary

This chapter focuses on the demographic changes in family behaviour which were taking place in Western countries from the second half of the twentieth century have happened in Slovakia in last twenty years. Before 1989, reproductive behaviour in Slovakia can be characterized as rather traditional. Compared with other Western European countries, both marriage rate and fertility rate were higher, while divorce rate was lower. Many already-mentioned tendencies indicate an increasing diversity in the reproduction and family behaviour of Slovakian population in the last fifteen to twenty years, and a perspective on the regions only amplifies this. The chapter presents an overview on a contemporary Family: between traditionalism and modernity. It discusses the state family policy and marketisation of social services in Slovakia. The chapter concludes that all characteristics of the family and family behaviour in contemporary Slovakia manifest traits of the postponed and compressed second demographic transition and increasing diversity.

Keywords: demographic changes; family policy; increasing diversity; marketisation; modernity; reproductive behaviour; Slovakia; traditionalism; Western countries
