Chapter Summary

This chapter presents details about the manuscript relevant to the discussion of outlining Bar Hiyya's life and work as well as his historical and cultural background. The various elements employed are introduced in the text under study. For each of the elements, a brief survey of previous research is presented followed with the assumptions and approach for each element. The manuscript contains most of the fifth chapter of Megillat ha-Megalleh. In his argument, Bar Hiyya presents a view of history, the course of which was planted by God in creation, which runs inevitably towards the future redemption of the Jews. Bar Hiyya uses philosophical, scientific, biblical and astrological material to support his argument, and several times makes use of originally Christian ideas, which he inverts to suit his argument.
