Chapter Summary

The Tîrgovişte edition of the Panoplia Dogmatike is carried out in the established tradition of book printing in the Romanian Principalities at the time. An investigation of the Tîrgovişte edition of the Panoplia starts with the man who worked on the text as editor-Hieromonk Metrophanes Gregoras of Dodone. A close examination of the books which Metrophanes edited reflects the changes which happened around 1710, after the appointment of Anthimos as metropolitan of Ungrovlachia. A review of the books edited by Metrophanes can be of help in better understanding the edition of the Panoplia and its context. At the time of the publication of the Panoplia, the town of Drystra was subordinated to the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Athanasios of Drystra is mentioned as the main benefactor of the edition of the Panoplia. Behind the heavily ornamented rhetoric, Athanasios provides several points that are important for understanding the idea behind the edition.
