Chapter Summary

The reference to the Panoplia Dogmatike in relation to the Eucharistic controversies does not exist solely in the writings of Robert Bellarmine. A series of Catholic theologians quoted the same parts of the anthology. The first references to the Panoplia situate the edition of the book in the religious controversies of the Elizabethan age. Nicholas Harpsfield left another early reference. The next reference to the Panoplia was made by Thomas Harding, English controversialist who shared Protestant views but returned to Catholicism. William Rainolds was among the authors who connected the Panoplia with the teaching of Berengar. Peter Canisius referred to the Panoplia in his Antidotes Sacrae Scripturae. Lorenzo da Brindisi quotes the Panoplia in his work Lutheranismi hypotyposis: pars I: Hypotyposis Martini Lutheri. The references to the Panoplia continued in the seventeenth century with the French cardinal Jacques Davy Du Perron, known as "the most subtle of the French controversialists".
