Chapter Summary

This chapter focuses on critical flora of the European Staurastrum and Staurodesmus species. Species judged to be either highly questionable or to be identical to others are noted in a list at the end. Taxa described as varieties and formae of those questionable species are not dealt with at all, nor is any attempt made to classify all varieties and formae that are considered not to belong to the species under the name of which they were originally described. Taxon names including their authorities are in accordance with the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) taking Ralfs as starting point for desmid nomenclature. Infraspecific taxa are distinguished in a given species, the nominate taxon is dealt with separately. A rough indication of the taxon-specific habitat conditions in terms of acidity and trophic status is given. Cosmopolitan species are known from all continents except Antarctica.

Keywords: Antarctica; desmid nomenclature; European Staurastrum; European Staurodesmus; infraspecific taxa; International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN); taxon names
