Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a list of European Staurodesmus and Staurastrum species. Species judged to be either highly questionable or to be identical to others are noted in the list. Taxa described as varieties and formae of those questionable species are not dealt with at all, nor is any attempt made to classify all varieties and formae that are considered not to belong to the species under the name of which they were originally described. Taxon diagnoses are confined to the essential discriminating morphological characteristics. Cell dimensions are inclusive of all projections (arm-like processes, spines and such-like) unless explicitly stated otherwise. Taxon names including their authorities are in accordance with the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) taking Ralfs as starting point for desmid nomenclature.
