Chapter Summary

This section presents a list of genus and species name relevant to the study of Mesotaeniaceae and Desmidiaceae of the European Lowlands. Most members of the family Desmidiaceae are characterized by a marked cell sinus dividing the cell into two distinctly separated semi cells. The section includes genera of the family Desmidiaceae. Some of the genera are Actinotaenium, Haplotaenium, Pleurotaenium, Tetmemorus and Euastrum. Actinotaenium cells are omniradiate, short-cylindric, ellipsoid or broadly fusiform, in the middle only slightly constricted and with broadly rounded or truncated apices. Haplotaenium cells are omniradiate, elongate cylindric, straight or irregularly curved, with a very shallow sinus and broadly rounded or truncately rounded apices. Pleurotaenium cells are omniradiate, more or less cylindric, straight or irregularly curved, with a shallow sinus and truncate or truncately rounded apices. Tetmemorus cells elongate, straight, with a shallow, widely open sinus. Euastrum cells biradiate, usually longer than broad.
