Chapter Summary

An ecohydrological approach to wetland restoration aims at understanding the possibilities of restoring hydrological systems that influence the wetlands. The research is aimed at trying to understand the functioning of hydrological systems at landscape level. An eco-hydrological landscape analysis combines a simple hydrological system analysis with a quick-scan assessment of ecological and pedological key-factors. The objects of the study are processes operating on a landscape scale which influence site conditions of the vegetation. It is a qualitative analysis which seeks to integrate existing geological, hydrological and ecological information in order to gain insight into the landscape processes which keep the target ecosystems healthy. In order to arrive at hypotheses on the origin of water flows, interpretation of the groundwater composition is important for completing the hydrological system analysis and the ecohydrological landscape analysis. This chapter discusses techniques used to carry out the ecohydrological landscape analyses on the Slovak mires.

Keywords: eco-hydrological landscape analysis; groundwater composition; Slovak mires; wetland restoration
