Chapter Summary

In this chapter, the systematics and distribution of species in the subfamily Tanypodinae are treated briefly, and their biology and ecology more extensively. The differences between the three European species published earlier are based on Laville and the authors' reared material of Ablabesmyia monilis and Ablabesmyia phatta. The authors found some overlap between the exuviae of A. monilis and Ablabesmyia longistyla, as described by Langton. The species Procladius lugens and Procladius imicola are treated together because there is some doubt about whether these two species are always properly and consistently identified in the literature. Adult males of Procladius rufovittatus are easily recognised by the shape of the gonostyle. Five species of the genus Zavrelimyia have been reported in the Netherlands and adjacent lowlands: Zavrelimyia barbatipes, Zavrelimyia hirtimana, Zavrelimyia melanura, Zavrelimyia nubila, and Zavrelimyia signatipennis.

Keywords: Ablabesmyia longistyla; Ablabesmyia monilis; Ablabesmyia phatta; Procladius lugens; systematics; Tanypodinae; Zavrelimyia barbatipes
