Chapter Summary

This chapter discusses the systematics, identification and distribution of Beckidia zabolotzkyi, Chironomus, Microtendipes confinis, Pagastiella orophila, Polypedilum arundineti, Tribelos intextum, Xenochironomus xenolabis and Zavreliella marmorata in Europe. All Chironomus species probably have a diapause in winter in fourth (rarely also in third) instar larvae. Second instar larvae are very rarely collected in winter, probably as a result of late oviposition. Larvae of the genus Chironomus are typical bottom dwellers, living in tubes of different forms. Z. marmorata lives in large parts of Europe, but possibly not in Ireland, Spain and Portugal. Z. marmorata has been found rarely in brackish environments. The chapter also discusses the systematics, identification and distribution of other genera and species.

Keywords: Beckidia zabolotzkyi; brackish environments; Chironomus; Europe; larvae
