Chapter Summary

This concluding chapter presents an overview of the book Europe's Living Landscapes, which treats the current crisis in landscape quality as a challenge for action and research. The book discusses many landscapes, where some of them beautiful, some of them sustainable, and some with serious problems. There are inspiring examples of work undertaken on behalf of the landscape, together with the people who are connected to it. Numerous questions have been posed in the book and many answers have been given. That landscape remains one of Europe's most fascinating assets is confirmed in the book. Some interesting new ideas are advanced in the book for raising awareness. The study of landscape paths is proposed as a way to make landscape characterisation less abstract, and to allow a better understanding of landscape character and the identity of places, by both scientists and citizens.
