Chapter Summary

From 1997 onwards, mapping of high nature value grasslands in Central and Eastern European countries was organized by the Royal Dutch Society for Nature Conservation within the framework of the Policy programme Biodiversity International (BBI-MATRA) of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food quality. This work has been done in close co-operation with local institutions such as universities, institutes and non-governmental organizations. The results of grassland mapping in the lowlands and sub-montane regions in five Central European countries are being used to analyze the importance of climatic variation on the distribution of mapped grassland types: dry mediterranean grasslands, steppe grasslands, dry limestone grasslands, dry acid grasslands, mesic moisture meadows, mesic dry and moisture pastures, wet grasslands and grasslands with halophytes. The analysis uses the Environmental Stratification of Europe to relate the vegetation types to climate using bivariate and multivariate methods.

Keywords: Central Europe; climatic variation; Europe environmental stratification; lowland grasslands; nature conservation; royal Dutch society
