Chapter Summary

This introduction presents an overview of the concepts discussed in this book. The book provides a detailed description of the Soqotri texts of Corpus of Soqotri Oral Literature (CSOL). It also provides an overview of Arabic and English section and glossary. The inventory of the consonantal phonemes of Soqotri is easy to establish, and their phonemic representation in transcription rarely presents serious difficulties. Writing Soqotri in Arabic characters has a relatively long history. Indeed, a substantial amount of Soqotri lexemes recorded in Arabic letters can be found as early as the first European account of the Soqotri language, J.R. Wellstedt's famous Memoir of 1835, masterly re-edited by M.-C. Simeone-Senelle.
