Chapter Summary

For most of the lexemes collected in this glossary, the traditional Semitological arrangement by consonantal roots has been followed, by far the most convenient presentation system for a conservative Semitic tongue like Soqotri, where the old root-pattern system is still very much alive. Lexemes not easily fitting this arrangement are listed alphabetically. Whenever the root identification in a given word or form may present difficulties, cross-references have been provided. Lexical headings display the same quadripartite structure as the corpus itself: from left to right, the Soqotri lexeme in Semitological transcription, the English translation, the Soqotri lexeme in the Arabic-based script and, finally, the Arabic translation. The complex system of the quadriradical verb in Soqotri requires a special nomenclature of its own.

Keywords: Arabic-based script; quadriradical verb; Semitological transcription; Soqotri lexeme
