Chapter Summary

This chapter examines masters' statements on the specific structure of human speech and their views on the vocal utterances in the animal kingdom. The expressions of human are based on a wide range of terminological and conceptual instruments. The key words in it are its Latin form according to vox ("vocal utterance", "word") and sermo ("speech", "talk") or locutio (loquela, loqui) ("speaking"). The chapter presents a discussion on origin of speech and language and linguistic diversity. According to Albert the Great, the ability to speak is a uniqueness of human capability, the concept of the order of nature. Through them he shares his peers, his thoughts and emotions. The chapter analyses the differences between human and animal vocal utterances. It observes that certain animals seem to mimic human speech and understand in some way. The original text of the chapter is in German.
